When the Coventry branch of the Royal Air Forces Association (RAFA) closed, its board decided to donate residual funds of approximately £2,000 to the local division of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.
The funds were originally provided to RAFA Coventry through the Lady Mayoress’s Fund for the specific purpose of supporting RAF veterans in need.
A cheque for the full amount of £2,017.34 was presented to SSAFA Coventry Divisional Treasurer, Bill Edmonds, and Ray Kirkwood, SSAFA Coventry Branch Treasurer, by RAFA Coventry representatives Dave Palmer and William Taylor.
Mr Palmer, of the former RAFA Coventry branch, commented:
“SSAFA provides invaluable aid to serving and veteran Armed Forces, and their families, in Coventry. We’re proud to provide these remaining funds from our branch to the charity to ensure that the funding supports Coventry veterans who may be in need of SSAFA’s vital assistance.”
SSAFA Coventry Divisional Treasurer, Mr Edmonds, added:
“While it comes as the result of the unfortunate closure of the RAFA Coventry branch, we are honoured to receive this donation and to fulfil its intended purpose. We work closely with veterans across Coventry to provide welfare and wellbeing assistance, and the funding will be used in direct support of that work.”
SSAFA has been working for the whole UK Armed Forces community since 1885. Its mission is simple: to help those who need it when they need it and how they need it to make sure that no-one ever battles alone.
