The University Royal Naval Unit (URNU) Northumbria recently celebrated its 30th Anniversary with a remarkable event that brought together past and present members, distinguished guests, and supporters.
The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) is proud to have provided funding for such an important event, reinforcing our commitment to serving those who serve us.
Despite a few inches of snowfall in the morning, the day was filled with warmth, team spirit and memorable activities.

The celebration featured speeches from several notable figures, including the current Commanding Officer (CO), the unit’s first CO, Lieutenant Commander Martin Baker (Retired), Commodore Thomas Knowles, the Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne & Wear, Ms. Lucy Winskell, and Officer Cadets who shared insights into the unit’s ongoing activities.

Attendees enjoyed guided tours of HMS Example, led by Lieutenant Oliver Thomas and current Officer Cadets.
A demonstration of the Bridge simulator showcased the unit’s cutting-edge training capabilities, while additional tours of HMS Calliope added to the immersive experience.
Two representatives from the Military Education Committee were also in attendance, as well as numerous alumni, including four original members from the unit’s founding days, adding a sense of tradition and continuity to the gathering.
The event underscored URNU Northumbria’s proud history, its role in developing future leaders, and its vibrant community of alumni and supporters. It was a fitting celebration of three decades of excellence and service.
“What an amazing day, to see the original Commanding Officer mixing with our current Officer Cadets and the 1994 Officer Cadets talking with the current Commanding Officer was fantastic, you could see on the faces of the guests that hadn’t seen each other for decades – that they still had the friendship forged during their times at the URNU and especially at sea.
