Military charity celebrates sixth year of support

Local military charity, The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH), is celebrating its sixth year of support from BAE Systems. The company recently donated £10,000 to the Worthing-based charity, which cares for physically disabled ex-Servicemen and women.

The generous donation from BAE Systems in Rochester – which designs, develops and produces some of the world’s most advanced avionics equipment – will go to fund QAHH’s rehabilitation services at their facility on Boundary Road. This includes physiotherapy to keep veterans as active and mobile as possible, and speech therapy to help those who have had a brain injury learn to speak again. Since 2012, BAE Systems has donated over £50,000 to fund care for disabled veterans and continues a relationship which is so vital to the charity.

Elizabeth Baxter, Head of Fundraising & Marketing at QAHH said, “All the staff and veterans at QAHH are so grateful that BAE Systems, Rochester continues to support us, and our relationship with them is so important to us. The amazing support that they have given to QAHH over the last six years has helped us to achieve our fundraising targets and provide our wonderful veterans with the care they need and so richly deserve. The rehabilitation that the £10,000 will fund will greatly improve the mobility, independence and overall quality of life of the veterans we care for, and we thank all at BAE Systems for their generous and continued support.”

“As an organisation with a military heritage, we’re incredibly proud to support the men and women who make up our Armed Forces community,” commented Sallyann Mclean, Site Lead Executive at BAE Systems in Rochester. “The care and support QAHH provides to its residents is unparalleled and vital in ensuring quality of life – it’s our pleasure to support them in their efforts for a sixth consecutive year. At BAE Systems we are committed to supporting the communities in which we operate, and will continue to work together with local communities to support service members, past and present, as well as their families.”

About The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home

The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home was established in 1919 – the charity celebrates its 98th anniversary this year (2017).

The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home is a registered charity, providing care and rehabilitation for physically disabled ex-Servicemen and women. Our residents’ needs are complex and many have multiple disabilities; some have neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s, Acquired Brain Injury or Motor Neurone Disease, others are paralysed or do not have use of their limbs, some are terminally ill. We support on average 140 residents a year.

We take up to 60 residents at any one time.

The average age of residents is 64 with the eldest resident being 98 and the youngest 31.

Our residents represent the tri-services: Royal Navy, Army and RAF.

Services at QAHH include nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, an active social and recreation department, rehabilitation kitchen, a chaplaincy service, counselling, IT facilities, a rehabilitation garden, sensory room, coffee shop and function room and regular outings on our specially adapted coach.

With no regular government funding The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home must raise over £1.3 million each year to maintain its nursing and rehabilitation services for ex-Servicemen and women.
