Supporting Service children in School – England and Wales

The Royal British Legion have this month launched new best practice guides for improving the provision of education to Service children in state-maintained schools in England and Wales. They can be found on The Legion website here: http://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-involved/campaign/support-for-service-children/

The guides look at some of the big challenges facing Service children today and by sharing examples of best practice from across England and Wales, recommends ways in which local authorities, schools and families themselves can improve the experience of Service children in education. Problems associated with admissions into schools and the adverse effects on a Service pupil’s wellbeing are explored, alongside information on the extra funding available to Service children through the Service Pupil Premium, Education Support Fund and more.

The guides proudly reference the excellent work of several local authorities and schools, and of MKC Heroes and Reading Force; two charities whose work is generously supported by the Legion; and the Royal British Legion Women’s Section President’s Award Scheme.

These guides will be useful tools for Service families who have queries about the support available to them, for schools with Service children on the roll wondering how they can better support these pupils, and for local authority education departments and Armed Forces Covenant representatives.

If you have any questions regarding the guides, please contact The Legion’s Public Affairs team on publicaffairs@britishlegion.org.uk
