South West based charity Alabaré held a thrilling fundraiser on Sunday 25th March as 45 participant’s abseiled down the Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth.
The event helped to raise over £12,000 for Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans service as those taking part descended over 100 metres down the side of the iconic harbour side landmark.
With each of those taking part pledging to raise a minimum of £200, the event helped to raise vital funds for veterans who are homelessness or those at risk of being so. The abseil was also held in recognition of the opening of our new Gosport Home for Veterans, Greenwich House, which opened late 2017 thanks to the generous support of Greenwich Hospital.
Laura Knight, Alabaré Community Engagement officer said;
“We are overwhelmed by the support that we have received from the community. A huge thank you goes out to all involved, be that those who took part in the event, those who sponsored or supported in any way. The funds raised from this community event will allow us to continue to providing the help and support that those who have served our country so richly deserve”
Andrew Lord, Alabaré’s Chief Executive, stated:
“These kind of fundraisers are invaluable. Our Homes for Veterans initiative depends on the generosity of military charities and supporters. Without them we can’t do this amazing work.”
Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans service provides dedicated support to Veterans across the South of England and Wales – specifically; Wiltshire, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Devon, Dorset as well as North and South Wales. On any given night our Homes for Veterans are able to keep over 120 Veterans off the streets.
We were also delighted to have the support of MP for Portsmouth South Stephen Morgan.
He said; “Alabaré does lots of really important things around supporting veterans and those who have come out of the services. It’s a basic human right that people have a roof over their head so it’s really fantastic that there are charities out there doing really good things providing veterans with homes.”
