The Not Forgotten, a British Armed Forces charity for serving and ex-military personnel hosted 20 veterans during two respite and activity breaks at Ashcombe Estate in Devon, as guests of the Rayner family.
The charity held two events which each took place over four days; one for veterans and their partners, followed by a group of individuals, who pitted themselves against each other as they enjoyed a variety of exciting activities and some friendly competition, at the Ashcombe Activity Centre.
The events are designed to encourage comradeship and challenge through fun games and activities including clay shooting, archery, go karting and quad biking. For those who prefer something a little less fast-paced, but no less competitive, quoits, ladder ball and bean bag tossing were also on the agenda.
Veterans stayed at Ashcombe Cottages on the Estate and enjoyed evening BBQ’s and games that brought everyone together, including charades and The Not Forgotten’s very own version of The Chase!
The Not Forgotten is based on the principles of providing entertainment and recreation including social activities and challenge holidays, to those injured in the service of their country.
Brigadier James Stopford, CBE, CEO of The Not Forgotten tells us:
“This respite trip is particularly important, as one of the events provides an opportunity for veterans partners to accompany them.
“This will enable them to unwind together and have a bit of fun and respite, regain some balance and share experiences in the company of like-minded individuals.
“Our trips are all about comradeship and support and this event helps to ensure veterans partners, who provide invaluable ongoing support to those who have suffered physical injuries or are experiencing mental health issues – are not left unforgotten.
“We find these trips have a significant positive effect on individual’s health and wellbeing, improving their self-esteem and dignity. It is a fantastic opportunity for them to feel connected again after the isolation of 2020 and it is a great privilege for us to help lift their spirits and rekindle their confidence.”
