Care For Veterans

Care for Veterans – Trustee (Finance)

***THIS JOB VACANCY HAS NOW CLOSED***

Worthing, West Sussex

About Us

Care for Veterans (formerly The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home) was established in 1919 to care for those soldiers returning from World War I with life-changing disabilities. For over 100 years, we have provided long term nursing care, rehabilitation, respite and award-winning end of life care to disabled ex-service personnel from the RAF, Army, Royal Navy, Reserve and Auxiliary services and their families.  It has an excellent reputation for its standard of care both locally and nationally. The 60-bed home has been at Gifford House in Boundary Road Worthing since 1933.

Further information about Care for Veterans can be found on our web site: www.careforveterans.org.uk.

The Role

Trustees are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of the charity, its financial health and developing its aims and objectives in line with the governing document, legal and regulatory guidelines.

Our trustees bring a range of diverse professional and experience to the Board. Following the retirement of a trustee, CfV is particularly looking to strengthen its board with a trustee with accountancy and /or finance experience. Trustees are unpaid but reasonable expenses are payable. The appointment will be for four years from May 2023 with a standard extension of a further four years, subject to reappointment.

The time commitment of trustees primarily involves attending Board Meetings and associated committees, which include finance, remuneration, fundraising and clinical governance and supporting the executive team.  On average this will be for about 12 – 15 days per year. Meetings are normally held at Gifford House in Worthing or on-line if infection control restrictions dictate.  The successful candidate is expected to serve on the Finance committee and others as the case may be. Fundraising experience is desirable.

The purpose of the committees is to provide specialist strategic advice to the Board of Trustees as well as monitoring the overall performance of the Charity.  These are interesting and critical roles which would benefit professionals looking to contribute to the charity sector.

About You

If you have empathy with the purpose of our Charity, then we would welcome your application. Previous trustee experience is not necessary as new trustees will be provided with support and training. Military service or a connection with one of the three services is desirable.

Care for Veterans is committed to encouraging diversity and gender equality throughout the organisation. We actively encourage applicants who will help broaden the diversity, gender, and age demographic of the Board. However, some may be disqualified by law from acting as charity trustees; full details can be found on the Charity Commission website.   Due to the work of our charity a DBS check and references will be required.
