They might be some of the (cinematic) universe’s baddest baddies, but even those on the Dark Side clearly have a redeeming features, and raising funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is one of them.
Members of the Imperial Scottish Garrison, a unit within the 501st Legion – an international costuming organisation dedicated to all things Star Wars – will be fundraising for SSAFA – the UK’s oldest tri-service charity – on Saturday May 13 on the concourse of Glasgow Central Station, which is not, thankfully, anything like Mos Eisley Spaceport.
The Sith-SSAFA event is the brainchild of Terry McCourt, a former Para and now SSAFA Glasgow & Renfrewshire branch fundraiser, who is no stranger to the railway station.
Terry spearheaded a campaign over recent years to secure donations and support for a memorial wall at the station to remember the 55 recipients of the Victoria Cross from Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
His dedication to those men who received the highest award for valour in the presence of the enemy paid off in spades. Since its unveiling last year, countless thousands of people have seen the memorial, with many stopping to see if they recognise a name, a regiment, a battle.
Monies raised at Glasgow Central Station on May 13 by the Imperial Scottish Garrison will go towards SSAFA’s life-changing, and in some cases life-saving work, in the area.
Darth Vader, a stormtrooper, and a TIE fighter pilot will be on the main concourse from around 8am to mid-afternoon helping take donations.
