The Merseyside Branch of SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has a new chairman.
Ken Orme enjoyed a distinguished career in the Regular and Reserve elements of the Army. He served with the Welsh Guards and then spent many years with 208 (Liverpool) Field Hospital. Here, he rose through the ranks to become Company Sergeant Major (WO2) and was commissioned to the rank of Captain in 1977.
Demonstrating further his sense of duty in the public sphere, in Civvy Street he was a trained nurse (RMN and SRN) and Senior Nursing Officer in Liverpool before retiring in 2000.
Ken has been an active member of SSAFA Merseyside since 1995 and over the years has raised many thousands of pounds for the branch, helping it carry out work for serving and retired military personnel, and their families, just as the charity has since 1885.
On his appointment, Ken said:
“Taking on the role is an absolute privilege, especially for a geriatric such as me who has had to move from a 1960s’ comms ethos to a computer in six weeks!”
