Do you want to make a real difference to the lives of the military community? Are you a confident, self-starter with welfare experience? We are offering a full time post to someone with strong people skills, who can work independently and as part of a large team, to join DMWS in NHS (GG&C) Health Board Area.

The Welfare Officer post will be a joint DMWS and NHS post. It will operate under an honorary contract with the NHS Board and will be line managed by the DMWS Head of Region and the Veterans Support Coordinator (VSC). Management, training, supervision, safeguarding and guidance will be provided through the DMWS support network and Head Office.

The post will build on the existing internal Veteran support network across the region which includes DMWS and Helping Heroes, a partnership between SSAFA and Glasgow City Council Armed Forces.

The Welfare Officer will be based in the NHS GG&C Board Area as part of an integrated NHS military community welfare team with a particular focus on issues which delay recovery and cause stress and anxiety. They will work closely with clinical teams across NHS GG&C to identify veterans, make teams aware of issues and concerns and in particular will coordinate with discharge teams who have strong links to the health and social care partnerships but no dedicated knowledge of the armed forces community or the many third sector organisations available to offer additional support to veterans and their families.

The responsibilities of the Welfare Officer will include the welfare and effective management of referrals as part of a multi-disciplinary team. Attending multi-disciplinary meetings and carrying out joint, and lone visits to patients, and liaising with other agencies within the hospital and community to ensure the best outcome for patients and families. You will be required to correctly assess the welfare needs of service users with unfaltering professionalism and sensitivity. You will need to be able to provide a rapid, solution-driven personal response to support in times of need, or in crisis situations.
