The Veterans Charity invited landmarks, military bases in the South West to join our initiative to light up the darkness in 2020. The event is known as #LitUpRed and participants are invited to light their landmarks red on the eve of Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
St Michaels Mount in Cornwall also lit up red on the morning of the first Routes of Remembrance train run by Great Western Railway from Penzance Station in 2022.
This year they have once again agreed to light up this iconic global landmark over the Remembrance weekend.
RAF St Mawgan have also joined us again by lighting up their historic Seaking helicopter gate guardian.
We have also been joined by London City Hall in the past for the Routes of Remembrance event Wreaths Across the Atlantic on VE Day. The Rose Theatre in London, the Land’s End landmark signpost, the RNAS Culdrose gate guardian, a Supermarine Seahawk.
RAF Brize Norton even went as far as lighting up the World! Well, their globe design gate guardian.
The first Poppies to Paddington train, named in honour of Corporal George Sheard RM, one of the WW2 Cockleshell heroes, was also lit up red in Penznace station before if departed for London.
It was an initially an idea to show that venues remembered during the pandemic and we hope many more will light up in 2024.
