On 5 August, The Veterans Charity handed over a Poppy Parachute wreath to members of the Cornish Parachute Regiment Association in the shadow of the iconic St Michaels Mount in Marazion, Cornwall.
This is the first element of a special 80th anniversary of Routes of Remembrance. There are a couple of links to Arnhem and Cornwall that inspired our latest event.
The first is that Lt Piers St Aubyn MC who before his death was not only a former resident of the Mount, but he was also a member of the Parachute Regiment and served at Arnhem. Lt Aubyn was awarded the Military Cross for his actions during Operation Market Garden.
Tom French of the Parachute Regiment Association will take the wreath to Arnhem.
The parachute canopy part of the wreath, which is created from sea shells, picked from Mounts Bay will be detached from a poppy wreath which will be parachuted into Holland as part of a mass airdrop for the 80th anniversary, before being reattached to the parachute for Tom to take to the memorial event.
St Michael is also very appropriately the Patron Saint of Paratroopers.
On the 17th of September 2024 we will be holding a Tri Service event at St Michaels Mount to coincide with elements in the Netherlands at 1944hrs there is to be a special finale to this particular Route of Remembrance.
