On 15 September 2024, the Kiltwalk will see participants donning their tartans and walking through scenic routes to raise funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. Among the walkers will be Pauline Jack from Falkirk, who has a deeply personal connection to the cause.
Pauline’s Inspiring Story
Pauline’s journey with the RAF began in an unexpected way.
“My husband was in the RAF for 14 and a half years. We met via The Forces Weekly newspaper as pen pals in 1986,” Pauline recalls.
“He was based in Germany at the time. We started off as pen pals and found we had a lot in common. We got engaged in 1987 and married on 30th April 1988. We’ve been married for 36 years. It is a long story, but I have never regretted the advert I placed in the Forces Weekly newspaper all those years ago.”
The couple’s life together has been a testament to resilience and love, facing challenges that many military families know well. “When my husband left the RAF, it was difficult for him to get employment. SSAFA helped and was there if we needed further help,” Pauline shares. This support has inspired her to give back by participating in the Kiltwalk.
Preparing for the Kiltwalk
While Pauline hasn’t engaged in specific training for the event, she is confident in her ability to complete the walk.
“I can easily walk 14 miles,” she states, ready to take on the challenge with determination and spirit”.
