Kirsty Mackenzie takes on her first running challenge for SSAFA at the AJ Bell Great Scottish Run 2024

Kirsty Mackenzie, a proud partner of a serving British Army soldier, will take on her first-ever running event at the AJ Bell Great Scottish Run 2024 to raise funds for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity. This event marks a personal milestone for Kirsty, who overcame significant knee issues earlier in life and was once told she might never run again.

Kirsty has been back to running for several months, focusing on strength and conditioning at New Jennaration Studio in East Kilbride and speed and endurance training with the Strathaven Striders. Her dedication to preparation highlights her determination, but her goal for the race is not about speed.

“I’m not a fast runner, but my goal is to complete the race and be proud of my effort. When I look back at my younger self and the knee problems I faced, it makes me so proud to even enter,” says Kirsty. “It’s not about your completion time—it’s about your reason for doing it.”

Kirsty has chosen to run for SSAFA because of the charity’s importance to both her and her partner, Adam. “SSAFA offers incredible support to servicemen and women, from career advice to mental health assistance. Unfortunately, Adam has lost many friends due to mental struggles, and we both hope that by raising awareness of SSAFA’s support, we can help others reach out when they need it most,” she shares.

Serving personnel, veterans, and their families can access support by visiting ssafa.org.uk.

Although Kirsty and Adam have not yet needed to use SSAFA’s services, they know it could become a crucial contact as Adam transitions to civilian life in the coming years. For now, they’re committed to raising awareness and supporting SSAFA events whenever possible.

“We know it’s hard for people to donate right now, so every penny means the world to us,” Kirsty adds.

As Kirsty looks forward to the run, she’s excited to have her family cheering her on.

“Our little girl, Poppy, will be waiting for me at the finish line with her Daddy and our SSAFA bear—that’s all the motivation I need!”
