Alabaré’s BIG Sleep Returns to Margam Country Park to Support Homeless Veterans in Wales

Following the success of last year’s event, Alabaré is thrilled to bring back its flagship fundraiser, the BIG Sleep, to the picturesque Margam Country Park in Port Talbot. On Saturday 5 October, participants will forgo their usual comforts to spend a night outdoors, raising awareness and essential funds for homeless veterans in Wales.

The BIG Sleep is more than just an event; it’s a stand against the growing crisis of veteran homelessness. Nationally, estimates indicate that between 100 and 400 veterans sleep rough every year and a further 3,000 to 4,000 face homelessness in temporary accommodation, sofa surfing, or living in cars and derelict buildings, the need for support is greater than ever. Funds raised will directly benefit Alabaré Homes for Veterans, providing safe, supportive housing and a path to stability for those who have served our country.

David, a former soldier in the Royal Artillery, found himself battling undiagnosed PTSD after serving in Iraq. Although he initially tried to build a new life with his family and run his own business, his mental health struggles eventually left him homeless. With nowhere to turn, David sought help from Alabaré, where he finally received the support and guidance he needed. Today, David is on the road to recovery, actively volunteering in his community, and working toward rebuilding his life.

“Alabaré provided me with not just a roof over my head, but the stability and support I desperately needed to start over,” says David. “Thanks to their help, I am now on the right medication, reconnecting with my family, and focused on building a better future. I don’t know where I would be if I hadn’t been referred to Alabaré.”

Participants of the BIG Sleep will experience the beauty of Margam Country Park, a location featured in iconic productions like Merlin and Doctor Who. The 19th-century gothic mansion and surrounding 800 acres of parkland provide a stunning backdrop for a night of reflection and solidarity.

“At Alabaré, we believe that no veteran should face homelessness after serving our country. The BIG Sleep is a powerful way for our community to come together, raise awareness, and make a tangible difference in the lives of those who have sacrificed so much. Every night spent under the stars brings us one step closer to ensuring that all veterans have a safe and supportive place to call home.” — Rebecca Mullen, Fundraising Manager at Alabaré

The event is open to all individuals aged 14 and above who are in good health. Each participant is encouraged to raise at least £100 to support our veterans. Don’t miss your chance to make a difference—register today at alabare.co.uk.
