Army Benevolent Fund – Director of Grants and Welfare

***THIS JOB VACANCY HAS NOW CLOSED***

The Army Benevolent Fund (ABF) is the Army’s national charity, supporting soldiers, veterans, and their immediate families, in times of need. The Charity operates a regional structure across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with its central office in London.

On the retirement of the current incumbent, the charity is seeking an experienced, motivated and engaged candidate to become the Director of Grants and Welfare. Supervising the work of a small team and reporting, via the CE, to the Board of Trustees and Grants Committee, the role involves direct responsibility for the planning and delivery of benevolence grants in support of the Army family within the budget and policy parameters of the charity’s articles and strategic plan. The role provides the necessary due diligence to trustees that grants to third parties accord with both regulatory guidelines and the charity’s ethos. A member of the Senior Management team, the Director of Grants and Welfare also plays a lead role in the charity’s engagement with the MOD, OVA and the wider military charity sector.

The role would particularly suit a suitably senior former military officer with experience in the personnel field and exposure to the strategic levels of policy and decision making. A deep understanding of the charity sector and/or experience in the dispersal of benevolence grants, in addition to an demonstrable empathy for the charity’s beneficiaries, would be an acceptable alternative to previous military service.

The starting salary is £90,000. After a probationary period of 6 months the successful candidate will benefit from the Charity’s full range of employment benefits including an income protection scheme and an employer contribution pension. There will also be opportunities to participate in key Charity events and activities with a TOIL scheme in place.

This is a full-time post for 35 hours per week, on an initial two-year fixed term contract based at the Charity’s Office in Victoria, London. (The Charity currently operates a minimum of 2 days in the office).
