After conquering the North Coast 500 cycle run, around the most northerly coastline of Scotland, in October 2020, Jonathan Thomson has set himself a new challenge. In an adventure called Raid ’21, it involves a gruelling ride from the Mediterranean to the Atlantic, through the French Pyrenees.
His new odyssey started on September 6th with a warm-up ride of four days, to Luchon. Then Jonathan embarks on the main event, cycling from Argelès-sur-Mer on 13 September, on what he plans to be a journey of eight days, weather and other conditions permitting, covering 1,000km and involving at least 40,000ft of hill climbs.
As with his 2020 journey, his twelve days of mountain cycling this year is dedicated to supporting armed forces’ veterans’ charity PTSD Resolution. Jonathan says:
“Put simply, too many of our veterans, of all ages and some stretching way back, and some of those still serving, suffer the evil effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. This wrecks their lives and deeply affects those of their families and close friends. It is also a major cause of suicide.
“PTSD Resolution provides really well-developed treatments and runs itself as economically as possible, meaning that a very high percentage of donations raised go directly to fund the treatments. As a rule of thumb, one course of six sessions, which can be life-changing, costs in the region of £750.
