Greenwich Hospital awards grant of £27,000 to King Edward VII’s Hospital as part of a three-year funding agreement to support their Veteran Pain Management Programme

Greenwich Hospital is delighted to make the second of a three-year grant award to King Edward VII’s Hospital to fund continued access to their Veterans’ Pain Management Programme (PMP) for former Royal Naval personnel.

Last year, Greenwich Hospital awarded King Edward VII’s Hospital a grant of £81,000, spread over three years, in support of their PMP and aimed at former Royal Naval personnel living with chronic pain.

King Edward VII is a private hospital based in London and a registered charity specialising in treating and supporting veterans from the armed forces.  Given the Hospital’s charitable status, it works to ensure surpluses are reinvested into the Hospital for the benefit of its patients and has a long association with the armed forces.  Attending the PMP is free to veterans who qualify and are referred by their GPs.

Since 2015, King Edward VII’s Hospital has treated over 500 veterans living with chronic pain to improve their quality of life and is recognised by the Care Quality Commission for its outstanding practice. They deliver between six and eight programmes each year with a maximum of ten veterans attending each programme, ensuring veterans receive individual treatment plans. Each programme team consists of specialists in pain management services with consultants in Pain Medicine, Psychology, Psychiatry, nurses and physiotherapists.

Programmes are assessed and veterans are followed up to assess the impact of attending the programmes with positive outcomes reported for the majority of personnel taking part.

Commenting on the support for the PMP, Jonathan Ball, Director of Grants at Greenwich Hospital, said,

“Transitioning to civilian life while enduring chronic pain as a result of military service can be demotivating and debilitating, so to have an opportunity to receive dedicated and specialist help from the King Edward VII’s Hospital is especially valuable, and an important priority for funding as it can make a huge difference in a veteran’s quality of life.”

Alex Le Vey, Director of Strategy and Philanthropy at the Kind Edward VII’s Hospital, said,

“Thank you to Greenwich Hospital for recognising the value of our unique Pain Management Programme and how it benefits veterans. We want to continue providing PMP services to as many veterans that need this support.”
