Hattons of London, specialists in rare and exclusive coins, launches its 2025 VE Day 80th Anniversary Gold Sovereign series on April 7 and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity will benefit from each coin sold.
SSAFA’s relationship with Hattons began in 2018, and to date has raised more than £750,000 for the Armed Forces charity. These funds go to support past, present, and future generations of UK military personnel – serving or retired – and their families.
The nine coins, struck in in solid 22 carat “Victory Gold” (a gold comprised of 22 carats of pure gold and two carats of pure palladium) are being issued to coincide with the 80th anniversary of VE Day on May 8 this year. This blend of metals provides the coins with a whiter hue than the normal yellow gold of Sovereign coins.
The evocative imagery on the reverse side of the coins shows, on the smaller coins, a dove of peace clasping an olive branch with the legend “VE Day 80th Anniversary”. The larger coins have a more detailed version of this design with the addition of clouds and rays of sunlight in the shape of a “V for Victory” in the background.
The obverse side features a portrait of His Majesty King Charles III.
Jonathan Sandall, SSAFA’s Director of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications, said:
“We are extremely proud of our partnership with Hattons of London, a company with a strong and well-respected brand, with values that align with ours.
“Since 1885, SSAFA has made an unfailing commitment to the men and women of Britain’s Armed Forces and their families, continually adapting to meet their changing needs, whilst ensuring they never battle alone.
“However, we can only continue this life-changing – and in some cases life-saving – work with the help of supportive companies such as Hattons of London, and for this, we are very grateful. Since 2018 Hattons of London has donated 10 percent of all net profits from sales of military-themed coin strikes in support of SSAFA beneficiaries, bringing their total donations to over £750,000.
“We’re hugely excited about continuing this partnership for 2025 with the launch of Hattons’ latest edition commemorating the 80th anniversary of VE Day.”
Hattons of London’s Managing Director, Simon Mellinger, noted:
“We’re delighted to partner with SSAFA once again in our promotion of the 2025 VE Day 80th Victory Gold Sovereign range. These coins commemorate a very special event and the pale colouring of the coins and the central design theme, the dove of peace, reinforce the whole purpose of the anniversary: to celebrate the peace that has largely prevailed in Europe since 1945. A reminder we need right now more than at any time since then.
“The launch of this range comes just a few days after the very sad news of the passing of John ‘Paddy’ Hemmingway, the last of the Few.
“We are reminded of the sad fact that most of our WWII heroes are no longer with us and we need to keep their memories alive. We hope this stunning range of coins provides a meaningful and enduring way of doing that and will also help support SSAFA in the invaluable work they do for our servicemen and their families.”
