Historic Royal Palaces – Director of the Tower of London

***THIS JOB VACANCY HAS NOW CLOSED***

Historic Royal Palaces (HRP) is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House Whitehall, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle. We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built. HRP is a charity and a commercial business, raising all of its own funds and depending on the support of visitors, members, donors, sponsors and volunteers. We have an extensive record of achievement in recent years, and ambitious plans for the future at all of our sites.

With a 1000-year-old history – as a fortress, castle, prison and zoo – and attracting nearly three million visitors each year, the Tower of London is the crown jewel of HRP. The site and the post are steeped in history and tradition; the post carries with it the honorary titles of Governor of the Tower of London and Keeper of the Jewel House.

We are seeking to appoint a new Tower Director to further our strategy and manage the operations of the Tower of London. Bringing strong commercial drive and entrepreneurial vision, the Director will oversee the development and delivery of a distinctive HRP experience at the Tower whilst maintaining our commitment to excellent customer service. The Tower Director will build on existing success and ensure the sustainability of The Tower into the future. Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Director will contribute effectively to the collective leadership of HRP as a member of its Executive Board.

Successful candidates will have a track record of delivering highly innovative projects that engage a diverse range of audiences and visitors. The new Director will work closely with the Palaces Group Director to ensure consistent operational excellence across HRP. The successful candidate will have a background in the British Armed Forces, Army, Navy or Royal Air Force (preferably obtaining the rank of full Colonel or above, and equivalent) and will bring substantial experience of strong senior level leadership across complex and competitive customer-focused organisations. They will have a positive, empowering and collegiate approach that will enable them to lead high performing teams and influence diverse stakeholders both across the wider organisation and externally to create and deliver distinctive, sector-leading experiences.
