In what may be one of the world’s most visible live acts of Remembrance, the Union Jack Club (UJC), a 120-year old London-based military charity, plans to light up the city’s skyline with massive 80 metre-high projections onto their Waterloo home.

On Saturday 9th November 2024, from 1700hrs, a sequence of carefully curated images, animations and words will illuminate the north facing elevation of the Club’s landmark building, to create the UJC Beacon of Remembrance. The event will be visible for miles across the capital and also viewable live online, accompanied by music from The Military Wives’ Choirs.

Hugh Player, Chief Executive of The Union Jack Club, said:

The Union Jack Club is the London home-from-home for enlisted members of our Armed Forces and the UJC Beacon of Remembrance is our way of showing the importance of this date across our capital city, our community and around the world.”

The UJC Beacon of Remembrance first appeared during Remembrance Weekend 2023, and this November’s display is set to cover twice the area of the Club’s Waterloo home. The display will be visible live to tens of thousands of Londoners, across the Thames into west, north and east London. For those not in the capital but wishing to watch and listen, the event will be broadcast on the Club’s website www.ujc.org.uk. where a count-down clock is currently in position. For a taster of what’s to come, a link to an edited recording of the 2023 event can be seen here. https://vimeo.com/920082644

The Union Jack Club would like to thank the 1901 Arts Club for their invaluable help with locating projection and filming equipment and Centrepoint for kindly locating filming equipment.
