The ADVANCE Charity exists solely to enable, fund and support the ADVANCE Study research programme. It is primarily a grant-making charity and aims to ensure that there are sufficient funds to complete the study.

The ADVANCE Study (Armed Services Trauma Rehabilitation Outcome Study) is a 20-year cohort study investigating the long-term physical and psycho-social outcomes of battlefield casualties. ADVANCE follows more than 550 battlefield casualties, and an equivalent number of matched uninjured servicemen as a control group, from the UK Armed Forces following deployment to Afghanistan between 2002 and 2014. The aim is to use the knowledge gained from the Study to support and plan the best care possible for present and future generations of injured servicemen and women. There is no other study of its kind underway anywhere in the world, and there is considerable interest and growing involvement from the US medical community.

We’re constantly adapting our approach to best suit the needs of those who come to us for support. We provide the following programmes:
Sport and Recreation – We support active lifestyles and the benefits they have on health and well-being, by providing equine competitions, sporting events and recreational activity. We aim to make our equine centres affordable to all who wish to use them.
Health and Wellbeing – We provide Equine Assisted Services (EAS) to Therapy, Recovery and Rehabilitation. We aim to deliver four equine therapy courses each year to help veterans who are facing severe mental challenges. The Virtual Equestrian Centre provides a platform with pre-recorded video content, tailored to the demands of equestrianism, and is accessible to everyone online.
Learning – We provide Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) to the Neuro Diverse community by focussing on developing life skills, values and building confidence and character.
Welfare – We provide community hubs in our centres, and have a Welfare Hub and Community Café in Tidworth
Governance and Assurance – We provide our equine centres with governance and assurance to deliver a firm base from which to operate.

Calvert Exmoor takes a unique and person-centred approach. We assist our guests along their journey to a more confident and empowered self, with an inclusive attitude and atmosphere from our staff and centre at all times. Whether guests visit by themselves, with family and friends or as part of a group, we offer breaks and activities for everyone, regardless of age or ability.
Guests’ social skills develop naturally through the cultivation of deeper connections with other people within and outside of their group during their stay through activities and down-time. As a charity, we ensure that a financial situation isn’t a barrier to guests accessing our experiences. We do this through subsidising the rate our guests pay in comparison to commercial activity centres, as well as offering a bursary to those who are even more disadvantaged financially.

The Calvert experience helps to address physical and emotional isolation among families and individuals, as the support from our instructors encourages guests to build resilience and increase independence through being exposed to entirely new experiences in a safe and inclusive atmosphere with others. Visiting our centre, for the majority of our guests, is a catalyst for positive change, with a butterfly effect that leads to their increased self-worth, social skills and emotional resilience filtering into their everyday lives. Even during their visit, guests will often find themselves so invigorated that they book their next trip while here.

We often hear from guests after their visit and many report that their time at Calvert Exmoor has enriched their lives and empowered them to maximise their capabilities in every facet of their life.
