The ‘Mesothelioma UK – Supporting our Armed Forces’ specialist service for Armed Forces personnel and veterans affected by mesothelioma has been very well received by the Armed Forces community. The project continues to gather momentum, widening the range of contacts and links made. To date, the project has achieved the following:
- Mesothelioma UK Armed Forces Clinical Nurse Specialist and Benefits Advisor work closely together on Armed Forces issues
- A range of information leaflets have been developed, aimed at raising awareness of asbestos exposure within the military in both the occupational and domestic settings
- A range of social media, including a dedicated Facebook group, is available with updates on the project and case studies
- Awareness events proved to be a major factor in the growth of the project, providing excellent networking opportunities and resulting in invitations to speak and exhibit at other events
- A research project – Mesothelioma in the Military Experience Study (MiMES) has been developed in collaboration with the University of Sheffield and is recruiting patients, carers and healthcare professionals
