Over 4,000 people set Longleat aglow for Alabaré

Last Saturday (9th September) an astonishing 4,000 participants gathered in the iconic grounds of the Longleat Estate to take part in Glow in the Park:Longleat, the 6km UV family fun run.

The wet weather did not dampen the spirits and the crowd and atmosphere were buzzing with excitement. Families, running groups, groups of friends, individuals were swept around the course to 80s and 90s tunes. Disco The grounds were awash with neon sweatbands, face paints, neon tutus and smiles.

The course wound its way round the spectacular estate finishing in front of Longleat House and featured seven fun zones, including The Fluorescent Paint Blast, Squelchy Foam Zone, and for brave hearted runners The Lion’s Den!

Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans welcome new team leaders in Bristol and Gloucestershire

Alabaré are delighted to welcome Kenneth Kwogyenga as the new Gloucestershire Homes for Veterans Team Leader and Harrison Buttress as new Team Leader in Bristol Homes for Veterans.

Kenneth has been working with Alabaré for almost 4 years as one of the housing support workers at Homes for Veterans Gloucestershire. Originally, from Ghana, Kenny served in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He left after a tour of Afghanistan to pursue a new career, and found himself working for Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans, helping homeless Veterans in need.

High Sheriff Visits Alabaré’s Gloucestershire Homes for Veterans

On Monday 24th July Alabaré’s Gloucestershire Homes for Veterans welcomed the new High Sheriff of Gloucestershire, Lt Col Andrew Tabor JP, and his wife Lou to the home.

They met with a number of the Veterans, and having served as a Commissioned Officer in the British Army, Lt Col Tabor was able to connect and speak warmly with the residents within the home. Colonel (Retd) Ian Harris (Chairman of the Gloucestershire Ambassadors – Homes for Veterans, Alabaré) accompanied the visit as well as Major Charles Malet.

Alabaré Appoints New Trustee

Alabaré is pleased to announce that John Hunter has joined the charity as a trustee. John served for 29 years in the Army as an artillery officer, during which time he served in Europe, Canada, USA, Zimbabwe and Indonesia. Latterly he was, for 10 years, a director and Chief Executive, of a medium size charity offering soldiers opportunities to achieve vocational and educational qualifications to enhance their military career prospects and prepare them for their next career. John is also a volunteer with the Harnham Water Meadows Trust.

Alabaré Receives Overseas Support For Veterans

Andrew Lord CEO received a cheque for £1,500 from Rev Mike Wagstaff RN in a packed King’s Chapel, Gibraltar. In the presence of His Excellency, the Governor of Gibraltar, Lt Gen Edward Davis CB, CBE, KStJ and Commander British Forces Commodore Michael Walliker OBE RN. In addition to the regular congregation, as the service coincided with the WRNS 100th Anniversary event in Gibraltar, there were many retired WRNS in King’s Chapel together with servicewomen currently in Gibraltar.

New Gosport Home for Vulnerable Seafaring Veterans

Greenwich Hospital and Alabaré’s Homes for Veterans are launching an exciting new partnership in the historic Naval town of Gosport, Hampshire, providing accommodation for homeless Seafaring Veterans. The new project, Greenwich House will become residence for up to 8 homeless and vulnerable Veterans at any one time, allowing those in need to gain the support that they so urgently need.

With the first residents due to move in in June, work is already underway to get the home ready. As well as a beautiful new home, each Veteran will be provided with support to help them access healthcare, gain budgeting skills, find training and employment opportunities, and prepare to manage their own accommodation independently again in the future.

Personal Reflections of The Falklands War

On 16 March, at St John’s Place Lower Bemerton Salisbury, the Wiltshire Alabaré Ambassadors held a fundraising evening entitled “Personal Reflections from the Falklands War and its Aftermath”. Overall nearly 120 were present and in excess of £2,500 was raised for Alabaré.

The official guests were the Mayor of Salisbury, Derek Brown OBE, Brigadier Hodder, CEO of the Wessex Reserve Forces Cadets Association, Wing Commander Vincent Thomas, Second in Command at Boscombe Down and Major Richard Rimmington MBE, Royal Logistic Corp. The major sponsors were the Mark Allen Group, Chemring Countermeasures and Our Wilton.

Alabaré – Research Launch at The House of Commons

A report published today looks beneath the headlines of increasing homelessness in the UK, to understand the problems facing a small, but significant minority of Armed Forces Veterans who are ending up on our streets.

The report “Research into the housing-related support needs of homeless veterans” looks at what makes some ex-Armed Forces personnel more susceptible to homelessness than the vast majority who make a successful transition to civilian life, and how organisations can best meet their needs.
