Headley Court nurses visit disabled veterans at The Royal Star & Garter Homes

Residents at The Royal Star & Garter Homes were delighted to welcome RAF nurses stationed at Headley Court, the Armed Forces Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC), when they recently visited the Surbiton Home.

The disabled veterans shared a morning with the nurses participating in various activities together. After taking a tour of the Home, the nurses joined in with a lively dance session, aptly titled “wheels and heels on fire”, before taking a much needed break and an opportunity to chat with residents.

The Royal Star & Garter Homes receives Level 1 Kitemark for exceptional dementia care

17th August 2017 – The Royal Star & Garter Homes is proud to announce that both the Charity’s Homes’ have been awarded the Level 1 Kitemark by Dementia Care Matters, following recent, unannounced audits. The Charity has Homes in Solihull, West Midlands, and Surbiton, Surrey.

Level 1 is the highest accolade achievable through Dementia Care Matters’ National ‘Butterfly Home Quality of Life National Accreditation Kitemark’ awards. It indicates that a Home is demonstrating ‘exceptional person-centred dementia care of the highest quality of life level’. Only 1% of care homes within the UK achieve a Level 1 distinction.

Veterans’ Charity celebrates ‘topping out’ milestone of third Home

A new home caring for disabled veterans in High Wycombe reached an important construction milestone when the ‘topping out’ ceremony marked the building reaching its full height. The Royal Star & Garter Homes welcomed distinguished guests including The Rt Hon The Earl Howe, Minister of State for Defence, and Air Chief Marshal of the Royal Air Force, Sir Stephen Hillier, who led the ceremony.

Sir Stephen Hillier was met by the Charity’s Chairman, Major General Tim Tyler, and Chairman of Wycombe Council, Councillor Suzanne Brown. Sir Stephen was invited to carry out the traditional Saxon ritual of anointing a yew tree branch attached to the last roof beam with wine, oil, corn and salt symbolising wisdom, liberty, prosperity and hospitality. The beam was then hoisted into its final position.

The RT Hon. Earl Howe visits local veterans’ charity

Residents, staff and volunteers at The Royal Star & Garter Homes were delighted to welcome The Rt Hon. Earl Howe, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords and Minister for State of Defence, when he recently visited the Surbiton Home.

The Charity’s Chief Executive, Andy Cole, and Home Manager, Barbara Carter, gave the Earl a tour of the Home and the opportunity to see for himself the wide range of therapies and activities available to the residents.

RAF Halton visits disabled veterans living at The Royal Star & Garter Homes

Residents at The Royal Star & Garter Homes recently welcomed RAF servicemen and women when they recently visited the Surbiton Home.

Residents were delighted to welcome the Training Staff, Aircraftmen and Women currently stationed at RAF Halton to share an afternoon participating in various activities. After a tour of the Home, they joined in with Tai Chi, followed by a piano led sing-along.

Keeping military families connected

The Royal Naval Association (RNA) has kindly donated Apple iPads to the Navy veterans and partners who live at The Royal Star & Garter Homes. The donation was funded by the Aged Veterans Fund and named Project Semaphore: an initiative set up by the RNA to improve communications for aged Naval veterans.

The custom built 16GB iPad Airs were presented in bespoke RNA-branded protective cases and came pre-loaded with relevant apps. Sarah Clewes, Deputy Project Manager for Project Semaphore, visited the Homes to meet the veterans and give them their computer tablets.

Severely wounded at 19, veteran Stephen Vause shares his story for Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day is an opportunity to honour the bravery and commitment of British Service personnel both past and present. At this time, we think of the veterans cared for by The Royal Star & Garter Homes and share their stories of sacrifice and courage. One soldier, Stephen, was just 19 when he was severely wounded on his first tour of duty in Iraq. Now 29, Stephen receives specialist care from The Royal Star & Garter Homes.

Four-legged friends provide health and well-being benefits to veterans living with dementia

To celebrate Dementia Awareness Week, military veterans living with dementia were thrilled to welcome Tickle – a delightful miniature Shetland pony owned by The Phoenix Children’s Foundation to The Royal Star & Garter Homes in Solihull. All residents at the Home were invited to meet Tickle and spend a wonderful morning in her company, with plenty of opportunity to give lots of care and affection to the tiny pony

Marathon runners raise funds for disabled veterans

24 April 2017 – The London Marathon remains one of the biggest charity fundraising events in the UK and this year veterans’ charity The Royal Star & Garter Homes was represented by three runners keen to go the extra mile to raise funds for the Charity they feel so passionately for.

The 26.2-mile course was completed by Pauline Shaw, Director of Care and Service Development, Matt Petersen, a member of the Body of Governors for the Charity and Trevor Griffiths, an ex-Serviceman.

High Wycombe welcomes The Royal Star & Garter Homes

Staff and Governors from military charity The Royal Star & Garter Homes received a warm welcome from the Mayor of High Wycombe at an event to introduce the Charity to its new neighbours on Thursday 16 March.

The Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher, the Chairman of Buckinghamshire County Council David Letheren, Councillor Suzanne Brown, the Mayor of High Wycombe, local councillors and other supporters and stakeholders attended the reception at The Wycombe Swan to preview the plans for the new state-of-the-art Home being built in the Hughenden area.
