SAS: Who Dares Wins start to compete in SSAFA Midlands Soldier 30:30

TV Star and SAS veteran, Ollie Ollerton, is best known for his recent role in the popular show SAS: Who Dares Wins where he put contestants through a series of endurance tasks. He is now taking on a brand new personal challenge to support SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Ollie is a keen supporter of SSAFA and works closely with his local branch in particular, remembering that giving back to the military community is of vital importance.

On 17th February the challenge kicks off, consisting of a 30 mile or 30 km trek across the beautiful Uttoxeter countryside whilst wearing 30lb backpacks, teams of four will compete to cross the finishing line.

Your Armed Forces Community Needs You!

SSAFA urgently calls for new volunteers to support veterans who are feeling lonely and isolated

The latest research by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has found that more than two in five (41%) veterans aged 25-45 have felt lonely, isolated, or suicidal since leaving the Armed Forces. With one in five (22%) veterans stating that they would feel less lonely if they had a stronger support group.

In a bid to meet this need and ensure no veteran’s call goes unanswered, SSAFA is urgently appealing to local residents to join its network of dedicated volunteers and provide support for the Armed Forces community.

Third Sector reveals SSAFA as highest climbing military charity in Charity Brand Index

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has been unveiled as the third highest overall climber in the latest Charity Brand Index report, published by Third Sector.

The annual report determines which charities the general public are most aware of, which they intend to support and also measures trust levels. More than 4,000 UK adults were polled between June and August in 2017 to pull the data together.

3 night break for military families with additional needs children taking applications

As we enter the New Year, SSAFA is excited to propose a new pilot for the Family Break. This new format will be open exclusively to military families who have children additional needs and disabilities. It offers a weekend away at the Calvert Trust Exmoor on 23rd March 2018, for which there are 30 places.

Mentoring trial to support serving personnel transitioning into civilian life

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity has launched a new trial mentoring service to support service leavers in the transition to civilian life when they leave the Forces.

Working with the Ministry of Defence, Army, and the Career Transition Partnership, the two year trial at Catterick Garrison in North Yorkshire will supplement the assistance already provided to Service Personnel preparing for civilian life. The service will provide a SSAFA mentor for those who would benefit from additional support in navigating the transition challenge.

SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity is shouting out to the local community to sign up for an exhilarating challenge for 2018 – Midlands 30:30. Consisting of a 30 mile or 30 km trek across the beautiful Uttoxeter countryside whilst wearing 30lb backpacks, teams of four will compete to cross the finishing line.

This year, there is also an adjusted 14:18 route for teams wishing to take on a less daunting challenge, where trekkers will cover 14km carrying 18lb packs.

Local volunteer awarded BEM in New Year’s Honours List for services to the military community

A local volunteer has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours. Jean O’Hanlon, 66 from Alnwick in Northumberland has been bestowed the award for her voluntary services to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

SSAFA provides lifelong support to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force, and their families.

Jean has volunteered for SSAFA Wansbeck Division as a dedicated caseworker for the past 11 years and has worked tirelessly supporting veterans and their families in need.

Local volunteer awarded MBE in New Year’s Honours list for services to the military community

A local volunteer has been awarded a MBE in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours. Donald McPhie, 90 from Solihull has been bestowed the award for his voluntary services to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

SSAFA provides lifelong support to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force, and their families.

Donald has volunteered for SSAFA since 2004, filling many appointments at the Solihull Branch, including Branch Chairman.

Christmas cheer for SSAFA Veterans in Bristol area

Local veterans have been gifted a special festive hamper by CCP

It was time for an early Christmas present yesterday for the veterans supported by SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity in the Bristol area.

Cheltenham-based charity CCP, or Caring for Communities and People, kindly donated 27 hampers filled with all sorts of festive goodies including mince pies, biscuits, cakes and coffee to those in need of some festive cheer.

Christmas cheer for SSAFA veterans, thanks to ESS

Special festive lunch donated to military community in Southend

Christmas came early today for members of the SSAFA Veteran’s Lunch Club. Professional chefs armed with roast turkey and all of the trimmings descended to serve up a large helping of seasonal goodwill. The Lunch Club welcomed over 60 veterans in for the special event, making it a real calendar highlight.

In the true spirit of Christmas, the entire meal was donated by ESS, Support Services Worldwide, part of Compass Group, to say thank you for their service to our nation.
