Wellbeing of Scotland’s Armed Forces children & young people is top of conference agenda

The wellbeing of Scotland’s Armed Forces children and young people was top of the agenda at a major conference at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh last week.

Approximately 150 education professionals, members of the armed forces community, MOD, policy makers, local authority representatives and family support organisations attended the conference, which was hosted and organised by Scotland’s Armed Forces children’s charity, the Royal Caledonian Education Trust (RCET).

The theme for the ‘Building Brighter Futures Together’ Conference was wellbeing of the child, not just for attainment, but inspiring positive destinations in Armed Forces children and young people.

Improving mental health services for veterans and armed forces personnel approaching discharge

NHS England has launched improved mental health services for veterans in response to a national engagement undertaken last year. The views of veterans and their families have helped to inform a service that builds on the success of previous provision and seeks to provide increased access to local care and treatment across the country in a more uniformed manner. This includes recognising the early signs of mental health problems and providing access to early treatment and support, as well as therapeutic treatment for complex mental health difficulties and psychological trauma. Patients are also provided with help, where appropriate, with employment, reduction in alcohol consumption, housing and social support.

Housing Options Scotland (HOS) is a housing charity with almost 20 years of experience helping disabled people find the right house in the right place. In 2012 the organisation created a pilot project called “Military Matters” which aimed to give housing advice and support to disabled veterans in Scotland, or those who wished to return or relocate to Scotland. Through the life of the Military Matters project, HOS has also carried out housing briefs, created publications and given advice and support to all veterans, those in transition and those currently serving in the Armed Forces.

Transition, intervention and liaison mental health service for armed forces personnel approaching discharge and veterans

On 1 April 2017, NHS England is launching the transition, intervention and liaison (TIL) mental health service for armed forces personnel approaching discharge and veterans.

Provided across England, the service will seek to increase the access and treatment to appropriate and timely mental health services for armed forces serving personnel approaching discharge and veterans with mental health difficulties.

New guidance issued to NHS England commissioners to strengthen patient and public participation

A new guidance document on patient and public participation in armed forces has been published. The new framework is part of a suite of documents developed to strengthen patient and public participation in all of NHS England’s direct commissioning activities.

The new participation framework for Armed Forces provides practical guidance on the best ways to involve patients and the public in different services.
