Defence Secretary praises Broughton House

Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson praised Broughton House for the care it provides to veterans and for its vision for the future during a visit to the Salford care home for ex-servicemen and women.

Mr Williamson, who was accompanied by Bolton West MP Chris Green, met with veterans, staff and board members during his tour and learned more about Broughton House’s redevelopment plans.

The two-acre site is to be transformed into a Veterans’ Care Village in a £14m scheme.

HRH Princess Alexandra visits disabled veterans to mark Solihull Home’s 10th anniversary

Residents and staff were delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra when she visited The Royal Star & Garter Home in Solihull. The visit was part of a day of celebrations to mark the Home’s 10th anniversary.

The Princess was received by the Charity’s Chairman, Major General Tim Tyler, The High Sheriff of West Midlands, Mr Christopher Loughran, and his wife, Mrs Jane Loughran, Deputy Lieutenant Professor Nigel Thrift, the Mayor of Solihull, Mrs Flo Nash, and the Mayor’s Consort, Mr Alan Nash.

All the fun of the fayre, in aid of disabled veterans

There will be bunting galore on Boundary Road, Worthing on Saturday 14 July, as Care for Veterans opens its doors to the public for its Summer Fayre!
The charity’s annual event is held to raise money for the local charity, which cares for disabled ex-Service personnel and their families. Care for Veterans strives to improve the mobility and independence of its residents through rehabilitation services such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social and recreation activities.

New guide aims to improve care of ex-Service men and women in nursing homes

A new guide launched on 7th June, to help care homes provide better support for the hundreds of thousands* of service men and women in assisted living in the UK.

Produced by Demos think tank, in partnership with the Forces in Mind Trust and the Care Cluster of Cobseo (The Confederation of Service Charities), the guide will be sent to all UK care homes and care home provider headquarters.

Natwest team raise £10,000 for Broughton House Veterans

A former Royal Marine inspired his colleagues in the real estate finance team at NatWest in Manchester to climb Snowdon in aid of Broughton House, the Salford care home for ex-servicemen and women.

Fifteen members of the team climbed the Welsh peak and completed a 35-mile cycle ride across Wirral to raise £10,000 for Broughton House.

Those taking part were aged 23-60 and included the bank’s north west head of real estate Heath Thomas along with directors, regional managers, assistants and graduates.

Veterans’ charity has huge success at Worthing 10k

On Sunday 3 June, 55 runners took on the Worthing 10k in aid of local charity, Care for Veterans.

The team, dubbed the ‘Fantastic Fifty’, included staff from Care for Veterans, family members of Care for Veterans’ residents, a serving soldier, and ex-Service personnel.

Tyron Crayford, who is a resident at Care for Veterans, also took part and was pushed around the course in his wheelchair by four of the Fantastic Fifty.

School boy donates mascot bear to local charity

A very thoughtful young man has donated one of his teddy bears to a local charity to use as their new mascot.
Nine-year-old Harvey Tress, who goes to Seaside School in Lancing, donated his bear to local charity, Care for Veterans, where his Mum works as a Healthcare Assistant.

The bear, which has been nicknamed Valiant, is a fitting mascot for the charity as his fur is patterned with Army camouflage, and he comes wearing fatigues and combat boots.

Urban vision volunteers transform veterans’ courtyard garden

Green-fingered staff from public-private partnership Urban Vision have transformed a rundown courtyard garden at Broughton House, the Salford home for ex-servicemen and women.

A team of 13 volunteers from Urban Vision spent almost 60 hours revamping the neglected garden.

Urban Vision is a joint venture between Salford City Council, Capita and Galliford Try. It delivers a range of property, engineering and planning services across Salford to boost development and regeneration.

Legion care home residents welcome donated pots and plants

Apta and Jersey Plants Direct donate plants and pots to The Royal British Legion’s six care homes for residents to enjoy this summer

Residents of The Royal British Legion’s six award-winning care homes, four of which include specialist dementia care wings, have taken delivery of new plants and pots donated by Apta and Jersey Plants Direct, for their enjoyment this summer.

Dunkirk Memorial House in Taunton, Galanos House in Warwickshire, Halsey House in Norfolk, Lister House in Ripon, Mais House in East Sussex, and Maurice House in Kent have all gratefully welcomed the horticultural gifts, which include glazed poppy pots, geraniums, begonias, petunias, and impatiens.

Day care service brings local veterans together

The Star & Garter Club, a new day care service for veterans, is helping to tackle loneliness in the Solihull area. The service is provided by The Royal Star & Garter Homes, a charity which provides specialist residential care to veterans and their partners living with disability or dementia.

Norma is a guest who has been attending since the service started. She commented, “It’s fantastic here. Where I live I don’t get to talk to many people, so it really makes a difference coming here and having lots of people to chat with. My family are very happy knowing that I’m mixing with people.”
