Party time as RAF veteran Oswald reaches 99

The oldest resident at Salford’s Broughton House care home for ex-servicemen and women has celebrated his 99th birthday.

Friends, present and former staff and supporters of Broughton House attended a party for Oswald Dixon, whose cake was decorated with an RAF flag, badges and model aeroplanes.

Oswald came from Jamaica to join the RAF as an engineer during the Second World War. He remained in the service until he retired, teaching new recruits.

The Grand Rehearsal is a grand success!

The Grand Rehearsal, a new mini-musical by Jorgen and Libbet Booth, was performed over three days at Emmanuel United Reformed Church, Worthing and raised an amazing £2,800 for charity.

The story was of the predicament of a village choir whose numbers had reduced to just two singers, and the twist in the tale was that within five minutes of the show starting, the audience became aware that they were the new choir members and they would be the ones singing! And that they did, singing along to tunes like Bring Me Sunshine, Edelweiss and Land of Hope & Glory, to name but a few.

RNRMC continue to support Scotland’s naval veteran community

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) has confirmed that it will award military care home provider, Erskine Homes, a grant of £40,000 to ensure the continued care and support of naval veterans.

As an established provider of care, Erskine looks after around 800 elderly and disabled ex-Service men and women, their spouses and widows/widowers each year. They offer long term residential and respite nursing, dementia and palliative care to its occupants.

Make a difference by walking the distance

Worthing-based charity, Care for Veterans, which provides care and rehabilitation to disabled ex-Service personnel, is looking for participants to take part in a sponsored walking event in May.
Just Walk, on Saturday 12 May, is a unique challenge event at Goodwood Racecourse, where you can raise money for Care for Veterans and take on a personal challenge at the same time. You can choose to walk either 10km, 20km, 30km, 40km or the big 60km – pick the one that suits you best!

Did you know that RNBT can provide assistance with care home fees and also with domiciliary care?

You might not be aware that RNBT can offer support to older members of The RNBT family by making a contribution towards care home fees. RNBT can also make a contribution towards the cost of domiciliary care. If you know someone who is an ex-RN or RM rating, including reservists, or their widows, then ask them to get in touch with SSAFA who will arrange a home visit and make a recommendation for funding to RNBT.

A musical with a difference!

A musical is coming to Worthing and entertainment doesn’t get bigger than this. ‘The Grand Rehearsal’ promises to be big fun with music and dancing, where the audience is part of the show – a bit of drama, sing-alongs, dancing and great audience participation!
The show, which will be fun for all the family, will be on at the Emmanuel United Reformed Church, St Michael’s Road, Worthing, on Thursday 22 March at 7.15pm, and then Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 March at 4.00pm.

Bestselling crime and thriller writer helps raise £3,000 for local charity

International bestselling crime and thriller writer, Peter James, famous for the Brighton-based Roy Grace series, held a special ‘evening with’ in aid of Sussex charity, Care for Veterans, and helped to raise £3,000.

Mr James, author of 12 consecutive Sunday Times no.1s whose books have sold 19 million copies worldwide, took to the stage for almost an hour. He discussed his incredible career and shared fascinating, and often hilarious, stories and insights. He then answered questions from the audience, and signed books for waiting fans.

OA Awards Grants to Help with Care Costs

In 2016/17 the OA helped 28 people with Care Home top-up fees, totalling £66,987.

With an ageing population, more people will spend their latter years in a Care Home. For many the costs can be unaffordable, including for those in the officer community. Depending on the circumstances, the OA may be able to provide funding towards paying Care Home top-up fees or for care at home.
