Nicky is Legion’s first Admiral Nurse in Bradford

The Royal British Legion has appointed Nicky Addison to be the charity’s first community Admiral Nurse in Bradford, providing support to carers of those with dementia living within the Armed Forces community.

Nicky, 44, from a village near Ripon, previously worked as an Admiral Nurse for a local charity in North Yorkshire. She qualified in 2003 as a Registered Mental Health Nurse and has spent 14 years working with older people.

Nicky said: “This is a completely new service for Bradford. One in three people over the age of 65 will be diagnosed with dementia and, because we 35,000 potential beneficiaries in Bradford, that gives you an idea of the level of need.

Legion Care Home in Somerset given top award for dementia care

DEMENTIA care at a Legion-run home in Somerset has been branded “exceptional” by industry leaders.

Dunkirk Memorial House in Taunton was independently audited in the spring by Dementia Care Matters using the ‘Butterfly’ model featured on Channel 4’s Dementiaville.

The results have now been announced, with the home’s specialist dementia care wing, Dunkirk Mews, not only receiving its ‘Butterfly Homes 2017’ status, but also being classed as a ‘Level 1’ site in recognition of its “exceptional person-centred dementia care”.

New Reminiscence Café launches at Arboretum during Dementia Awareness Week

On Friday 19 May, the National Memorial Arboretum, in Staffordshire will host its first Memory Lane Café, during Dementia Awareness Week, providing a new forum for people living with dementia, carers, and their friends and family. The free of charge session will run from 10.30am to 12.00pm, using objects to stimulate senses and aid people in recalling prior experiences.
