Blind veteran from Fareham competing for the prestigious Holman Prize

A blind veteran from Fareham, Hampshire has been invited to compete in the inaugural Holman Prize, a $25,000 prize that will enable the winner to fulfil a life ambition.

Penny Melville-Brown OBE, has been invited to compete for the prize as a result of the profile she has built for herself across the internet and social media. If victorious, she hopes to take her baking project, Baking Blind, global. She says: “My adventure is all about food, because it delights me! It’s also a universal language with the power to bring us all together.”

Contractor from Horsham to take on three marathons in three days

A woman from Horsham is preparing to compete in an incredible three marathons in three consecutive days, with half the money raised going to Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Sarah McCarthy, 50 and originally from East Grinstead, will be competing in the Jurassic Coast Challenge, a three day challenge beginning on March 24. The picturesque coastal route will see participants begin in Charmouth, before heading through to Weymouth, Portland and Lulworth Cove, ultimately finishing in Shell Bay.

Blind veteran from Rhyl receives prestigious medal for helping liberate France from the Nazis

A Second World War blind veteran from Rhyl has been presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur for his part in the liberation of France.

Brian McManus, 90, was presented with the prestigious honour at the Blind Veterans UK training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno on Wednesday 1 March. The ceremony was attended by several members of Brian’s family including his daughter Linda and officiated by Steve Boswell, the charity’s Llandudno Centre Manager.

University lecturer from Chapel St Leonards to take on mammoth 100k challenge for military charity

A man from Chapel St Leonards is training to compete in a 100k walk across the Yorkshire Dales for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Jack Christian, 63, is a university lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, teaching business students on ethics and sustainability. It was due to what he describes as a strange sequence of events that he finds himself in preparation for the ultra-challenge.

Suffolk blind veteran to take on mammoth 100k challenge for military charity

A blind veteran from Bury St. Edmunds is preparing to embark on a 100 kilometre walking challenge for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for vision-impaired Service men and women.

Colin Penaluna, 55, will be taking on the challenge for the second time with his guide, Russell Deamer, an advertising professional from Burgess Hill, Sussex, with whom Colin has previously conquered the immense challenge.

HRH The Countess of Wessex opens new facility in Llandudno supporting blind and limbless veterans learning vital “life skills”

A new facility supporting veterans who have lost their sight, limbs, or both, has been opened by Her Royal Highness The Countess of Wessex GCVO at a military charity’s training and rehabilitation centre in Llandudno, North Wales.

Built in partnership between Blind Veterans UK and Blesma, The Limbless Veterans, this new “Life Skills” building will provide a rehabilitation environment to support essential life skills for independent living. The facility will support veterans who have lost their sight, limbs, or both, with a particular focus on supporting those who may be at risk of becoming homeless.

Deptherapy & Deptherapy Education runs 2nd Mental Health First Aid for the Armed Services Community Course

Fifteen members of the Deptherapy team including injured programme members attended the two day MHFA for the Armed Services Community held at Cantley House Hotel, Wokingham on 19/20 February 2017.

The course is a requirement for all Trustees, scuba instructors and divemasters selected to work as volunteers on the Deptherapy programme.
