DIY SOS is back supporting our veterans

The team returns to the Veterans Village to finish the extraordinary project which originated from a chance meeting between Nick and WWTW’s Founder & CEO, Ed Parker.

The project started two years ago, building homes for veterans and revitalising a community.

Once a dilapidated street on the outskirts of Manchester, the street is now home to some ex-servicemen and women who initially struggled with the transition back into civvy-life after leaving the Armed Forces.

The Royal British Legion have this month launched new best practice guides for improving the provision of education to Service children in state-maintained schools in England and Wales. The guides look at some of the big challenges facing Service children today and by sharing examples of best practice from across England and Wales, recommends ways in which local authorities, schools and families themselves can improve the experience of Service children in education.

Pompey’s Military Kids

Pompey’s Military Kids is a joint initiative set up by representatives from various schools across the city, in partnership with Portsmouth City Council and the Naval Families Federation. The Naval Families Federation will share good practice from this initiative via its partners with other schools in the UK and overseas in order to improve support for all Royal Navy and Royal Marines children. The Cluster Group was established to support Service children in a number of different ways.

Recent academic research by the University of Winchester has indicated that four out of ten service children who have the ability to progress into higher education are unlikely to do so.

Forces in Mind Trust provides grant funding to Anglia Ruskin University to develop and operate a UK-based facility for easy access to UK and international research on veterans and their families

OA Leads Discussion on Recruiting Veterans Aged 50 plus

Yesterday the OA launched a roundtable discussion, in partnership with Alexander Mann Solutions (AMS), on recruiting veterans aged 50 plus.

Top UK companies attended the event hosted by AMS at their London headquarters. The discussion focused on ‘Older Veterans – An Untapped Talent?’ a report which compared the transition experience of Veterans leaving the Services pre and post the age of 50. This primary research was commissioned by the OA and conducted by Chime Insight and Engagement Group.

Forces Media Academy Officially Opened by HRH The Duke of York

The first intake of students at the new Forces Media Academy met The Duke of York yesterday as he opened the state-of-the-art media facility.

Fifteen service leavers and veterans have just started the unique one-year Higher National Certificate (HNC) Media Production Course at the Academy, which is run by the Services Sound & Vision Corporation (SSVC).

The Duke of York, who is Royal Patron of SSVC, spoke to the students during a tour of the Academy.

He said: “To provide a course like this, for either retiring or leaving veteran service personnel, is absolutely second-to-none.
