Transportation sector comes together to showcase second career opportunities for Service leavers

The OA and Siemens were joined by Network Rail, Northern Rail, Transport for London and Alan Dicks Communication at the National Training Academy for Rail in Northampton, on 30 March, to provide an insight day for Service leavers.

Phil Heathcote, Sales Director for Siemens Rail Systems stated that rail passengers numbers were now at the same level as the 1920s – the supposed ‘golden age’ of rail – and are set to double within 20 years.

Fashion show raises over £1,800 for disabled veterans

Last week, The Queen Alexandra Hospital Home (QAHH) brought some glitz and glamour to Worthing, as it held a fabulous fashion show and raised over £1,800 towards the care and rehabilitation of disabled veterans.

The show featured a range of fashions for all occasions. Girls from Davison High School and some QAHH staff began by modelling fabulously glamorous evening and special-occasion wear, courtesy of local dress boutique, Velvet Birdcage.

Unique sculpture depicting WW1 arrives at Kelvingrove Museum

A stunning, symbolic sculpture depicting the last remaining tree in a First World War battlefield is set to go on display at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to coincide with the launch of the commemorations of the Battle of Arras which began 100 years ago this week.

The sculpture, entitled “FRANCE 1914”, was created by artist Simon Burns-Cox who donated it to Poppyscotland, an organisation which provides life-changing support for the Armed Forces community. Having previously been on display at the Scottish Parliament and the People’s Palace Museum, it will be exhibited at Kelvingrove for the coming 12 months, before moving to Glasgow’s Riverside Museum next year. Thereafter, it will be auctioned off with the funds going to Poppyscotland.

Maritime Charity Celebrates Centenary at London Guildhall Dinner

The leading maritime charity, Seafarers UK, is holding its Centenary Dinner at Guildhall this evening, exactly 100 years to the day since the first meeting was held in 1917 in the City of London to discuss the formation of the charity (previously known as King George’s Fund for Sailors).

Almost 300 guests will attend a formal Reception and Dinner in Guildhall to mark the occasion. Celebrated guests will include HRH The Earl of Wessex (President of the charity since 2012, when he succeeded The Duke of Edinburgh), Admiral of The Fleet The Lord Boyce, Admiral The Lord West of Spithead and the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Philip Jones.

On Thursday 23 March, to mark the uniquely important role The Defence Medical Welfare Service plays in our society, they were delighted to welcome their Patron, Her Royal Highness, The Countess of Wessex GCVO, The Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Nick Carter KCB CBE DSO ADC Gen and The Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Mr Nigel Atkinson to the Charity’s Headquarters in Andover. The visit provided the perfect platform for highlighting the successes of the work undertaken and promoted the fantastic welfare support carried out every day. This is an organisation which is leading the way in professionalising the welfare space and which delivers an impact disproportionate to its size.

Personal Reflections of The Falklands War

On 16 March, at St John’s Place Lower Bemerton Salisbury, the Wiltshire Alabaré Ambassadors held a fundraising evening entitled “Personal Reflections from the Falklands War and its Aftermath”. Overall nearly 120 were present and in excess of £2,500 was raised for Alabaré.

The official guests were the Mayor of Salisbury, Derek Brown OBE, Brigadier Hodder, CEO of the Wessex Reserve Forces Cadets Association, Wing Commander Vincent Thomas, Second in Command at Boscombe Down and Major Richard Rimmington MBE, Royal Logistic Corp. The major sponsors were the Mark Allen Group, Chemring Countermeasures and Our Wilton.

Prince Harry joins Veteran’s Mental Health Conference with Heads Together

Prince Harry attended a Veterans’ Mental Health Conference at King’s College London today where he led a panel discussion with three veterans on the power of conversations and getting the right mental health support.

At the event, organised by the King’s Centre for Military Health Research with Forces in Mind Trust, His Royal Highness also met an inspirational pair of injured UK and US veterans who are running this year’s Boston and London Marathons, six days apart, to raise awareness of military mental health issues.

Leading veterans’ mental health experts gathered today (Thursday 16th March) to discuss international perspectives on the mental health of the Armed Forces Community. They were joined by Prince Harry at King’s College London for the annual event, which for the second year running was sponsored solely by the Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT).

World-class speakers from leading UK and international institutions working in the field of veterans’ mental health gave a series of wide-ranging presentations and hosted debates. Prince Harry led a panel discussion with three former members of the UK and US Armed Forces who spoke about their personal experiences of addressing and managing mental health challenges, and the importance of encouraging open conversations about mental health.

Our nation owes much to the men and women of its Armed Forces who give so much to defend our values and way of life. The conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have highlighted these sacrifices. Today, the unveiling of a new memorial in Victoria Embankment Gardens, Westminster by Her Majesty The Queen, honours both the UK Armed Forces and civilians who served their country in the Gulf region from 1990 – 2015.
