Damaris Media and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity join forces for ‘Darkest Hour’

Damaris Media and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, have partnered on the release of Darkest Hour (in cinemas 12th January). To celebrate, two of SSAFA’s WWII veterans were given the red carpet treatment at the premiere on 11 December before watching the film. Both veterans attend the SSAFA Southend Veteran’s Club, which runs every Thursday.

Awards Judges have reviewed the nominations for the 2018 Soldiering On Awards.

The Soldiering On Awards independent panel have deliberated over the many nominations received across 12 Awards categories including 3 new business awards in partnership with X-Forces.

Soldiering On Awards President and Co-Chair of Judges General the Lord Dannatt GCB CBE MC DL said, “The Soldiering On Awards enable all areas of our community to come together and recognise outstanding achievements in support of the Armed Forces Community. Wiltshire Based Veteran Leads New Campaign to Highlight OA’s Work

Bryony Fuller, one of the first female officers to graduate from RAF College Cranwell, is leading a new campaign encouraging Service leavers and their dependants to contact the OA for assistance should they need advice or financial help.

The Wiltshire based former officer broke her neck, back and spinal cord after she fell down the stairs, an accident that left her paralysed on the floor for 30 hours. Bryony spent 12 weeks in the Intensive Care Unit followed by nine months recovering on a spinal injury ward.

Interview with Sophie Maynard, Forces Media Academy Student

The OA spoke to Sophie Maynard about studying Creative Media Production.

Tell me about your Service history
I joined the Royal Navy in November 2014, and became a Warfare Officer. I left as a Sub Lieutenant in October 2017.

What is the Forces Media Academy?
The Academy is for Service leavers and veterans wanting to work in the media, including television, film, radio, digital and marketing. It launched in September 2017 and offers a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Creative Media Production.

Join BFBS at a free live recording of Damn the Torpedoes Xmas Special

Forces Radio BFBS is recording a brand new Xmas Special of the multi award-winning military-themed comedy sketch show, Damn the Torpedoes.

The live 90-minute performance is on Tuesday 12th December at 7.30pm at the RADA Studios in London, and will be made into a half-hour Xmas Special for broadcast at Christmas.

Get set to hear hilarious skits throwing a spotlight on the comic side of service life, as ‘famous’ voices weave implausible plots and mimic military jargon.

Veteran Carl Marsh sets up his own businesses

An Army veteran from South Wales has set up two businesses after being the 100th wounded, injured and sick veteran to attend a self-employment course funded by Help for Heroes.

Carl Marsh, of Llantwit Major, South Wales has launched a celebrity interview website and a swimming instruction business thanks to support from the military charity.

He left the Army in 2010 after 12 years of service and one tour in Northern Ireland before he suffered a spinal injury and seven other health related issues which lead to him being medically discharged.

Left Right Left magazine Christmas Armed Forces appeal launched

Left Right Left, the new military memories supplement inside of resettlement magazine, Pathfinder International, has launched a festive campaign for relatives of loved ones away in the Armed Forces over the Christmas period, in which they can send in their messages of good will.

The campaign entitled “Jingle Comms – Festive messages for the Forces” will see Left Right Left ask for family members of serving troops to submit their messages of support for personnel away on operations or detachments over the festive period.

Blind Veterans UK comment on corporate partner Monarch Airlines ceasing trading

Blind Veterans UK wishes to take this opportunity to thank everyone at the Monarch Foundation for their charity partnership over the last two years.

As well as supporting the charity by raising money through a number of events and on-flight collections, the airline and the charity teamed up to deliver ‘sighted guiding’ training into Monarch Airlines’ cabin crew training programme.

The training raised awareness of the difficulties faced by vision-impaired passengers when travelling and advised the crew how they could make travelling a better experience for blind customers.
