Soldiering On Awards announces 2017 winners

The 2017 Soldiering On Award winners were announced on Friday 24th March at the Black Tie Dinner and Awards ceremony held at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge Hotel, London in the presence of the charity’s patron the Rt Hon Earl Howe PC.

550 Guests attended the Awards, hosted by award-winning journalist Angela Rippon and former Royal Marine medic Cassidy Little, the Awards ceremony recognized 46 finalists in 10 categories, naming each category winner.

The evening, opened by Soldiering On CEO Anne Donoghue, commenced with a minute’s silence in remembrance of PC Keith Palmer, formerly of the Royal Artillery, and all those killed and injured on the 22nd April.

Maritime Charity Celebrates Centenary at London Guildhall Dinner

The leading maritime charity, Seafarers UK, is holding its Centenary Dinner at Guildhall this evening, exactly 100 years to the day since the first meeting was held in 1917 in the City of London to discuss the formation of the charity (previously known as King George’s Fund for Sailors).

Almost 300 guests will attend a formal Reception and Dinner in Guildhall to mark the occasion. Celebrated guests will include HRH The Earl of Wessex (President of the charity since 2012, when he succeeded The Duke of Edinburgh), Admiral of The Fleet The Lord Boyce, Admiral The Lord West of Spithead and the First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Philip Jones.

Blind veteran from Hampshire reaches semi-finals of the prestigious Holman Prize

A blind veteran from Hampshire, who has been invited to compete in the inaugural Holman Prize, has been selected as one of the semi-finalists.

Penny Melville-Brown OBE from Fareham was initially invited to compete for the $25,000 prize as a result of the profile she has built for herself across the internet and social media through her online baking project, Baking Blind. If successful, Penny intends to take the project global. First, however, she’ll be required to draw up a detailed plan of exactly how she’d intend to use the money if she were to win.

Donations from the Annington Trust top £100,000 in 2016

Woodentots Nursery situated within HMS Collingwood, the Royal Navy’s training establishment in Plymouth was just one of a number of Service community projects that successfully bid for funding from The Annington Trust in 2016.

The Annington Trust was established for the benefit of Services Families living on the Married Quarters Estate with the objective of sponsoring community activities and projects.

Launch of new online resource challenges employers to think differently about taking on ex-Service personnel

The Poppy Factory – the charity that helps injured ex-Service men and women find work – has launched a new online toolkit for employers.

The Employer Toolkit, funded by Forces in Mind Trust (FiMT), gives advice and guidance to employers, helping them to manage a workforce with complex health conditions – and aims to dispel the negative stereotypes of veterans and the problems they may face.

OA Extends Military Skills Agenda with new London based Employers Knowledge Swap event

The OA are to repeat the success of previous employer insight days by bringing together employers looking to translate military skills within the civilian workplace.

Employers Knowledge Swap events set out to explore how a business is able to translate the skills gained in the military when seeking to attract, select and develop talent within their own organisations. The next OA Employers Knowledge Swap event will take place on 24th May, in London.
