Research shows Service children to be significantly underrepresented at university

Service children’s experiences may often give them skills and attributes valued by universities, but research by the University of Winchester has shown Service children to be significantly underrepresented in our Higher Education institutions and the Service Children’s Progression (SCiP) Alliance is working to find out more. Following the Alliance’s work, the new Office For Students recommends that HE institutions should be looking at support for this group’s access and success at HE. The Service Children’s Progression Alliance has a growing network of hubs across the UK bringing professionals together to make sure this cohort are supported in their education and empowered to make an informed choice about their future.

Naval charity and national law network join forces to raise money for the serving community

The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity (RNRMC) has partnered with Forces Law, a network of civilian lawyers, for a year-long initiative that offers affordable Will creation in exchange for charitable donations.

Launching on Armed Forces Day 2018, the ‘Make a Will’ project will see a select number of Forces Law members waive their fees on standard Wills. In exchange, those who require the creation of a Will are instead encouraged to make a charitable donation to the RNRMC.

Veterans to Compete in OA Inter-Services Triathlon

To celebrate 30 years of the championship, special veteran teams will also participate this year.

The OA Inter-Services Triathlon sees some of the best athletes from across the Armed Forces push themselves to the limit in individual and team categories. Competitors will swim through 1.5 km of open water, cycle 41 km of tricky terrain and finish the course with a 10 km run. The Fire, Police and Prison services are also entering guest teams.

Northern Businesses to Increase Recruitment of Veterans

Businesses across the North of England supported a Veteran Recruitment Roadshow, with over 40 businesses of all sizes from across the region attending to learn more about how they could tap into the veteran talent pool.

The event was hosted by Deloitte, The Drive Project and veterans’ charity the Officers’ Association at Virgin Money in Newcastle.

Whilst 71% of medium and large organisations say they would consider employing veterans, only 39% would consider employing someone with no industry experience.

Rory Underwood to Inspire Veteran Success at OA Bristol Networking Event

The former England rugby star and RAF officer will share his career journey and insight with serving and former officers.

Rory Underwood MBE is a legendary international rugby player, scoring a record 49 tries for England, winning six caps for the British Lions and playing at Leicester Tigers for 14 years. He also spent 18 years as a pilot in the RAF, spending more than 3,000 hours flying Tornados, Canberras, Hawks and Domines. Rory is now an experienced facilitator, psychometric profiler and performance coach.
