Local volunteer awarded BEM in New Year’s Honours List for services to the military community

A local volunteer has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours. Jean O’Hanlon, 66 from Alnwick in Northumberland has been bestowed the award for her voluntary services to SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

SSAFA provides lifelong support to anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force, and their families.

Jean has volunteered for SSAFA Wansbeck Division as a dedicated caseworker for the past 11 years and has worked tirelessly supporting veterans and their families in need.

Saltdean writer and poet competes in Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge for military charity he volunteers for

A writer and poet from Saltdean has competed in Revolve 24, the Brands Hatch Cycle Challenge, for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-service men and women, for whom he is a volunteer.

David Attree, 44 and a long time cycling enthusiast, grew up in Brighton near the charity’s training and rehabilitation centre, and has therefore been aware of the work the charity does for a long time. He says: “Since my early childhood I’ve been fully aware of the wonderful work Blind Veterans UK does in providing opportunities for blind veterans to regain their confidence and lead fulfilling lives.”

Age no issue for Brighton students volunteering for military charity

Two students living in Brighton are relishing their time spent volunteering for Blind Veterans UK, the national charity for blind and vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Milena Murphy, 17 and currently at Brighton College, along with Dan Egelstaff, 18 and currently at Sussex University, started volunteering with the charity for separate reasons, though have each found the experience enriching and fulfilling far beyond their expectations.

Peter McMurray

We were deeply saddened to hear of the sudden death on March 14th of Peter McMurray, an Official Volunteer, supporter, fundraiser and true friend of The Not Forgotten Association.

Peter helped at many NFA events and activities for more than 20 years, often with his wife Lyn at his side. They were both hugely generous with their time, showing great kindness and empathy towards our beneficiaries, warmly welcoming many into their own home.
