There is a critical skills shortage within Rail resulting from a high attrition rate and an increasing portfolio of macro-scale programmes. Military service leavers have already been identified in the DfT Transport Infrastructure Skills Strategy as part of the solution for not only their technical skill sets, but also their culture and behaviours, especially the value placed on safety. Many service leavers already go on to build second careers within rail, but a more structured approach will realise the solution sooner and more effectively.
