Fighting With Pride is calling on the government to honour its commitment to hold a full parliamentary debate on making reparations to the LGBTQ+ veterans affected by the historic Armed Forces “gay ban”. Here are our thoughts on the matter:
We urge the government to honour its commitment to hold a full parliamentary debate on the armed forces “gay ban”. From our experience of treating LGBTQ+ veterans who were expelled from the military we know the devastating impact it had on their mental health. Our research with female LGBTQ+ veterans who served under the ban shows that they faced negative experiences in the armed forces including fear and distress, sexism and institutional discrimination. The government must hold a debate on how to make reparations to those wrongfully dismissed from service.
We stand in solidarity with all LGBTQ+ veterans and are committed to providing the highest standards of support to them and their families. We continue to work with Fighting with Pride, as part of an Independent Review Group, to further understand how best to help these veterans.
