A former Royal Air Forces Association clubhouse in Eastbourne will be converted into retirement accommodation for RAF veterans.
The building on Wish Road was gifted to the RAF Association by the Eastbourne Branch Club when it closed in 2023.
Planning has now been granted for the RAF Association to create ten self-contained flats for RAF veterans and their spouses, widows or widowers aged 60 and over, each with their own bathroom and living, dining and kitchen areas.
Mark Shields, Head of Community Support at the RAF Association, said:
“We’re thrilled to add the Eastbourne site to our portfolio of retirement accommodation. Our research shows there is a real need for high-quality retirement homes in the UK, particularly among the veteran community. This facility will provide veterans a home among people who speak their language and share their experiences of serving in the RAF.”
The facility will allow RAF veterans and their spouses to maintain their independence while living in a tight-knit community who share an RAF connection.
A stone’s throw from Eastbourne Pier, the facility’s central location will allow residents to enjoy Eastbourne’s cafes, restaurants, shops and leisure facilities.
The Eastbourne facility will join five existing accommodation complexes manged by the RAF Association across the UK.
In return for an affordable monthly rent, RAF veterans and their spouses, widows or widowers can enjoy thoughtfully developed self-contained flats or suites, while onsite managers take care of day-to-day matters.
