Regional Prime South East football tournament raises over £5,000 for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity

A football tournament organised by CarillionAmey that took place at Burgoyne Barracks in Folkstone has raised a phenomenal £5,000 for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity.

Eight teams of footballers including serving personnel and civilians came together to support the Armed Forces community.

The teams included, Civvy St, DFTDC, Team GORA, Geri-Hat-Rick, Concept, Queen’s Gurkha Engineers, Delph and Safety and 1RGR and they played in searing hot conditions as they battled through the group stages in pursuit of reaching the final.

Aramark, the sites catering provider, generously provided drinks and food for everyone who attended which closed with an exciting final match between Team GORA and Queen’s Gurkha Engineers which ended in a 0-0 draw with Team GORA prevailing on penalties to secure the trophy.

Derek West, CarillionAmey Assistant Delivery Manager and organiser of the tournament, said:

“It’s taken months of preparation to organise the event and I’d like to say a big thank you to all our sponsors who either helped on the day or sponsored us by making a donation to SSAFA. We are still counting all the donations but it looks like our total raised will be over £5,000 – which is just incredible.

1RGR Quarter Master Major Morgan Bridge, added:

“We were very pleased that the SSAFA football tournament here at Sir John Moore Barracks was a great success and an event that was enjoyed by all, even if the weather was a tad too hot for most.

“We are thankful to Derek from CarillionAmey for spending a vast amount of time and effort setting this up and also the smooth running of it ensured by him and his support team. Roll on next year when 1RGR enter and win it this time!”

Lauren Thompson, Corporate Partnership Manager at SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, commented:

“We are extremely grateful to the team at CarillionAmey for raising a phenomenal £5,000 which will help us to continue our work supporting the Armed Forces community in need.

It is fantastic to see CarillionAmey, one of SSAFA’s valued corporate partners, put on such a great event that helps raise vital funds and awareness for our work.

“I personally would like to thank Derek West and all his support team for their hard work coordinating the event and bringing the SSAFA partnership to life on the football field.”
