SAIL Debt Advice Support to RN, RM, and RFA Families

Greenwich Hospital has awarded the Seafarers’ Advice and Information Line (SAIL) a grant of £166,829 to continue funding advice and support to former and serving Royal Navy, Royal Marines and Royal Fleet Auxiliary personnel and their families.

SAIL is a dedicated advice and information line that has provided free and confidential advice to seafarers and their families since 1996.

As an independent service operated by Greenwich Citizens Advice, SAIL offers in-depth advice, casework, advocacy and negotiation on behalf of those using the service with expert advice covering a range of issues: welfare benefits and tax credits, pensions, family and consumer issues, housing, debt and money concerns. All advice is confidential and can cover topics such as dealing with noisy neighbours and navigating the rules on nursing home fees.

The SAIL advice and information service is also available to ex-partners of serving and former serving personnel, widows and widowers and their dependants.

SAIL is independently audited by Citizens Advice nationally and campaigns for changes affecting all seafarers. Advisors are fully trained, and advice is quality-assured. SAIL is based in Greenwich but operates across the UK.

Jonathan Ball OBE, Director of Grants, Greenwich Hospital, said:

“Supporting the former and serving Royal Navy Family is vital and SAIL provide an independent and free information and advice line which is valuable to all members of the family, particularly when serving personnel are at sea.”

Michael Edwards, Interim CEO of Greenwich Citizens Advice, said:

“The funding from Greenwich Hospital provides certainty for the dedicated SAIL advice line and means we can focus on providing expert advice and information to continue to support the Naval Community when they need it.”
