One Birdcage Walk in the heart of Westminster was the recent setting for the first An Evening With… for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and England rugby legends Ben Youngs and Matt Dawson held an audience of more than 100 in rapt attention.
SSAFA, though the nation’s oldest tri-service charity, was new to many of them, but they were as keen to hear about its mission to support serving personnel, veterans, and their families as they were the personal stories and insights from the rugby stars.
Ben and Matt shared fascinating stories from their careers, offering unique perspectives on the game, both past and present. The lively discussion, followed by a Q&A session, gave those attending the chance to explore their experiences in greater depth, while enjoying an evening of sportsmanship and camaraderie.
The event also included a raffle with prizes including:
- A £100 voucher from Kricket, the modern Indian restaurant in Soho
- A lunch tasting menu with a complimentary champagne cocktail reception from Benares Restaurant in Mayfair
- Two signed rugby balls from Ben and Matt, plus a signed England rugby shirt from Ben

“The success of the event has marked the beginning of a new series aimed at engaging SSAFA supporters and raising awareness for its vital work. Funds raised from the evening, and future ones, will directly support SSAFA’s efforts to assist the Forces family in need.
