Taxi Charity for Military Veterans receives £15,000 from Army Benevolent Fund

The funding will support veteran trips to the Netherlands and Normandy

The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans is delighted to announce it has received £15,000 funding from the Army Benevolent Fund to help support two major acts of commemoration in 2025.

The funding will go directly towards two of the charity’s upcoming trips: to the Netherlands in May for the 80th anniversary of Dutch Liberation commemorations; and to Normandy in June to mark the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Colin Mills, London cab driver and Chairman of the Taxi Charity, said,

“We are incredibly grateful to the Army Benevolent Fund for its generous support. These trips are not only a vital way to honour those who served, but they also offer a powerful opportunity for veterans to connect, reflect, and share their stories. For many, these visits are a deeply personal journey and often their last chance to return to places where they once served.”

The Taxi Charity will be transporting veterans, many in their late 90s and older, in black cabs, accompanied by their carers and volunteer London cab drivers who give their time freely to support the veterans. The trips include visits to war cemeteries, commemorative services, and opportunities to meet with local communities and schoolchildren who continue to express gratitude for the liberation of their countries.

Brigadier (Ret’d) Peter Monteith, Chief Operating Officer of the Army Benevolent Fund, said:

“We are privileged to support this charity and the incredible volunteer drivers behind it. Their commitment to honouring our veterans, particularly in this milestone year, is nothing short of remarkable.”

The Army Benevolent Fund is the Army’s national charity, here for soldiers, former soldiers, and their immediate families for life. The charity has been at the forefront of support for the Army family since it was set up in 1944 during the last months of the Second World War so that brave servicemen and women would never face the post-war hardships experienced by veterans of the First World War.

Colin Mills continued,

“This Army Benevolent Fund grant plays a crucial role in ensuring that these trips are possible. With the support of grants and donations from the public, the Taxi Charity continues its commitment to celebrating and supporting military veterans of all ages.”
