The Taxi Charity ‘Our Heroes Fund’

Businessman Johnny Gallagher and 100 year old veteran Dorothea Barron have launched  a £1m fundraiser.

A Taxi Charity for Military Veterans Ambassador and a 100 year old veteran are rallying support as they launch a heartfelt fundraising campaign to ensure that the dwindling number of World War II veterans are honoured, supported, and never forgotten.

Sparked by recent media coverage and public outcry over the lack of government funding and recognition for these heroes, the charity is redoubling its efforts to provide vital assistance—led by a passionate fundraising initiative from long-time supporter Johnny Gallagher and his best friend Dorothea Barron.

The campaign aims to raise essential funds to continue the charity’s work providing companionship, and memorable experiences for military veterans—many of whom are now well into their 90s or even over 100.

“Many of these men and women made unimaginable sacrifices during the war,” said Johnny Gallagher. “They’ve served their country and been left behind in peacetime. The least we can do is honour their remaining years with the respect, care, and gratitude they’re owed. For far too long veterans have been let down or left in limbo until last minute about whether or not they will receive funding for events and trips.

“Me and Dorothea Barron my oldest best friend are raising money so her and the last of our heroes will never have to worry about paying respects to their fallen friends again. The goal is to raise a £1m before VE Day on the 8th May 2025, just a few weeks away. I know it is ambitious but I believe in the Great British public and I know we can do it.”

The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, founded in 1948, is run entirely by volunteer London black cab drivers and supporters. The charity organises regular trips, both in the UK and abroad, to places of military significance and remembrance. These include pilgrimages to the beaches of Normandy, visits to the Netherlands for commemorations, and social events, visits to museums, and special days out.

Their work goes far beyond simple transportation—it creates a lifeline of friendship, recognition, and joy for veterans who might otherwise feel isolated or forgotten.

Colin Mills, London Cab driver and Chairman of the Taxi Charity said:

“We are deeply moved by the unwavering support from individuals like Johnny. Our WWII heroes deserve unwavering support. That should never be in question. With this fund, we will be able to continue to support our veterans without the  constant worry about whether we will have the funds we need.”

As the UK approaches the 80th anniversary of VE Day, Johnny and Dorothea are calling on the public to donate to the ‘Our Heroes Fund’.
