Triple amputee and Blesma Member Craig Wood has successfully sailed over 1,750 nautical miles in just 17 days aboard his 41ft aluminium catamaran — with more than 5,000 nautical miles still ahead.
Craig is currently navigating toward Osaka, Japan, facing towering waves as high as double-decker buses and the risk of tropical storms.
He recently shared an update from sea, saying:
“I’m heading south, which means I’m coming into nicer weather, and the sun’s out.”
“The only issue so far, was that I noticed during a routine daily check that water had got into my starboard engine.
This is isn’t a concern at the moment, as I am sailing, but I will need the engine once I arrive in Japan to enter the harbour so I have spent some time working on it this week and will hopefully get it sorted beforehand.”
“I’m eating and sleeping well; and it’s been a really good week. I’m doing a bit of fishing and getting into the swing of things.”
A former Rifleman in the British Armed Forces, Craig lost both of his legs and his left hand in an explosion in Afghanistan when he was just 18 years old.
With this remarkable solo voyage, Craig hopes to raise £50,000 in support of Blesma and Turn to Starboard.
