For over two years the Union Jack Club has been fighting the planning application for a huge office building adjacent to its site, by property developers Bourne Capital. Lambeth Council initially approved the plan in October 2023, but it was delayed as the Mayor of London Sadiq Kahn and then the Secretary for State for Levelling UP Michael Gove were asked by us to consider call the application in for in independent review. Both have declined to use their powers so it is now back with Lambeth for final approval and we are asking Lambeth to reconsider.
- Our position is simply that this suggested 20-storey building, which would be 71m high and 48.7m wide and come to within 15.4 m (50 feet), right across the full width and elevation of the UJC’s southern wall and windows, is excessive in terms of its height and mass, and would significantly reduce the light and southern views Club Members currently enjoy – 44% of the existing windows would experience a notable change in the daylight levels
- The Club is not a hotel and should be given greater protection.
